The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.
And this is becoming a growing problem, I think, because n

#dAmnU Pwnage.

So I'm always really active in this chat channel on dA called #dAmnU.  It's a place where you donate 'kidneys' and the ~KidneyBot keeps a tally of who donates the most.  You donate every three hours, and at the end of the month, the winner gets a twelve month subscription.

So I'm all fuck yes? and I've been trying very hard to keep myself at the top of the game, and for most days (if not all) this month, I've been winning, with only a couple of people giving me very close competition.  Anyone in there knows that I looove competition, and hate it when someone slips behind me.

So anyway, I'm somewhere at around 30 kidneys donated today.  However, the ~KidneyBot likes to give love and wrath, adding or subtracting one kidney from a random user's score at random times during the day.

It's also worthy to note that sometimes, I'll see a user that once had a shitton of kidneys, suddenly have like, -1 kidneys, unexplainably.  I was quite glad this wasn't happening to me.

And the last point, is that ~KidneyBot allows you to set welcome messages on it when you join the room.  So with all of that combined, this crazy shit happened today.
